Block Printing at Home — Step by Step

Everything you need is already in your kit. Take your time, enjoy the process.

Step 1: Set Up Your Space

Choose a flat table with firm padding (similar to an ironing board) underneath, so the block can be pressed down evenly.

Place the color pads (#4) on the table (sacking side up).

Step 2: Prepare the Paint

Pour a small amount of fabric color (#2) onto the color pad.

Spread it evenly using the scraper (#4) provided in the kit.

You want a thin, even layer — not puddles.

Less paint = cleaner prints.

Step 3: Practice First

Take the practice cotton swatch (#3) provided in the kit. Secure the practice cotton swatch firmly in place before you begin printing (to hold the fabric firmly in place, use pins, paperweights). The goal is simple: no fabric shifting while pressing the block.

Press the block (#1) gently onto the paint.

Lift it up and stamp once on the swatch.

Adjust pressure and paint amount until the print looks clear.

Step 4: Print on Your Napkin

Place the napkin (#3) flat on the table.

Decide your layout first (center motif, repeat pattern, borders).

Press the block evenly onto the paint.

Stamp firmly once. Don’t rock the block.

Lift straight up.

Repeat slowly. Line up prints visually — perfection isn’t the goal.

Step 5: Switch Colors or Blocks

Wipe the block with a damp cloth before changing colors.

Use a fresh area of the color pad or clean it lightly.

Step 6: Let It Dry

Leave the printed fabric undisturbed.

Dry flat.

Step 7: Optional Heat Setting (Recommended)

After drying:

Iron on the reverse side of the fabric.

Medium heat, no steam.

Iron each area for 2–3 minutes.

This helps fix the color.

Step 8: Care Instructions

Wait 48 hours before washing.

Hand wash separately in cold water.

Mild detergent only.

Dry in shade.

Quick Tips

Light pressure = faded print

Too much pressure = smudging

Embrace tiny imperfections — that’s the beauty of hand block printing
